How companies like Colruyt, Pepsico, Sarah Lee and Unilever share tools and objectives to reduce their carbon footprint (case on principle 4)

“Thanks to the piloting work of the companies involved, all GS1 members can now utilise the same measuring tool and achieve the same objective: to reduce CO2 emissions in the Belux market.”
Jan Somers, CEO GSI Belgium and Luxemburg

GS1 is an organisation that optimises efficiency and collaboration between its members, who are producers or distributors of fast-moving consumer goods. Several members of GS1 wanted to measure the carbon footprint of their logistical activities to be able to assess the impact of their activities and to identify potential ways to reduce their CO2 emissions.

The Approach
CO2logic collaborated with 18 GS1 members and logistical consultant Tri-Vizor to develop a pilot project. Members of the group included Alpro, Dr. Oetker, Ferrero, Heinz, Kraft Foods, Lima, Nestlé, Pepsico, Sara Lee, Unilever, United Biscuits, Carrefour, Colruyt and Delhaize.
After consultation with all partners the ADEME carbon footprint tool has been chosen and an online CO2 calculator has been put available to all 18 partners.

The Collaborative Advantage
Here we can see that when organisations join forces they can set clear goals and establish common guidelines for carbon footprint measurement tools relating to transportation and warehousing.

Some of the Results
All participating partners know their CO2 footprint and can measure process regularly. An important discovery and saving was related to surprisingly high levels of energy and gas consumption by fridges where the goods are stored (up to 30% for some companies).
